Hope Returned: How Comprehensive Heart Care Helped Blanca Trujillo Reclaim Her Life

Just months ago, Blanca Trujillo spent most of her days confined to her bed.

Living with Class III heart failure, even the simplest activities left her exhausted. Walking across a room felt impossible. The overwhelming fatigue and shortness of breath made daily life increasingly difficult, and the emotional toll became just as heavy as the physical one.

"I wondered every day if it would be my last," Blanca recalls. "I was depressed because I couldn't do anything."

Like many patients with chronic heart failure, Blanca had reached a point where she felt she had run out of options.

Finding Hope Through a New Care Team

When Blanca came to South Heart Clinic, she was searching for answers, and for hope.

After years of struggling with complex cardiovascular disease, she made the decision to transition her care to our team. That decision marked the beginning of a comprehensive approach focused not just on treating one condition, but on caring for her heart as a whole.

Blanca's journey highlights the importance of having a multidisciplinary cardiovascular team working together to evaluate every treatment option and develop a personalized plan of care.

Throughout her journey, she was cared for by several members of our team, each playing an important role in improving her health.

Her primary cardiology care has been led by Dr. Michael Evans and Martina Briseño-Lucio, NP, who have worked closely with Blanca to manage her heart failure and overall cardiovascular health. Dr. Michael Balderas restored circulation to her leg by treating a 100% blockage that had been causing significant pain.

As Blanca's heart failure symptoms progressed Dr. Frank Mazzola, our cardiac electrophysiologist, determined that she was an excellent candidate for the Optimizer® Smart Mini device. Throughout the process, Nathalie Guajardo, PA, helped guide Blanca and supported her every step of the way.

A New Option for Heart Failure Patients

The Optimizer® Smart Mini is a minimally invasive implantable device designed for patients with moderate to severe chronic heart failure who continue to experience symptoms despite receiving appropriate medical therapy.

The device delivers precisely timed electrical signals known as Cardiac Contractility Modulation (CCM™) therapy, which helps improve the heart's pumping function. Unlike traditional heart rhythm devices, CCM therapy is designed to help the heart contract more effectively, reducing symptoms such as severe fatigue and shortness of breath and improving a patient's quality of life.

For Blanca, the device offered something she hadn't felt in a long time, hope.

A New Beginning

Since receiving the Optimizer® Smart Mini, Blanca says her life has changed dramatically.

Today, she is no longer confined to her bed. She is walking, has more energy, and is able to enjoy the everyday moments she once feared she would never experience again.

"With the device, I feel a lot better," Blanca says. "I want to tell people. I have been blessed by what all the doctors at South Heart have done for me."

Her gratitude reflects more than the success of a single procedure. It represents the power of coordinated, comprehensive cardiovascular care, where specialists work together to provide the right treatment at the right time.

More Than Treating Heart Disease

Heart care is about more than procedures and technology. It's about helping people return to the moments that matter most.

For Blanca, that means spending meaningful time with her family, enjoying greater independence, and looking toward the future with hope instead of uncertainty.

Stories like Blanca's remind us why comprehensive cardiovascular care matters. When specialists work together, patients benefit from a seamless continuum of care that addresses every aspect of heart health, from prevention and diagnosis to advanced therapies that can dramatically improve quality of life.

At South Heart Clinic, we are honored to walk alongside our patients every step of their journey, providing innovative treatments and compassionate care designed to help them live longer, healthier, and fuller lives.

Because every heartbeat, and every moment with loved ones, is worth fighting for.
